We don’t go to the movies very often because it can get pricey pretty fast, but my kids do enjoy watching new movies as they come out on television or DVD. And thanks to Redbox, Netflix and Amazon, we can easily (and inexpensively!) watch newer movies together from the comfort of our own couch, all cozy in our pajamas! Plus, as a bonus we can pause the show whenever we need to for potty breaks and snack runs!
Sometimes my kids watch the movies on their own just for fun, but other times we make a bigger deal out of it and have a family movie night, which my kids LOVE! I love that they enjoy it so much and that we all get to spend time together, but I also love that I can do a fun movie night without spending a lot of money or time on preparations.
To make our family movie night special we do these 3 simple things:
1. Announce the movie in a fun way
Sometimes my kids know what movie we will be watching ahead of time, but other times I keep it a secret and surprise them. I announce what movie we will get to see by filling in the “Now Showing” poster that I have made. I keep this poster in a clear sheet protector (or you could laminate it) and then use dry erase markers to fill in the movie and time it will be starting. This way I can reuse the same poster for every movie night without having to reprint it each time!
You can print the poster that we use, or you could write the movie name on a chalkboard, dry erase board, or even on a regular piece of paper. However you do it, it will be a fun way to announce what the movie will be for your family movie night!
2. Give each person (or child) a ticket to see the movie
I made a printable with movie tickets all made up and ready to fill in. I fill ours in with the name of the movie that will be showing and what time it will start. My kids think it is so much fun to get these special “tickets” to watch the movie!
Now, whenever we do movie nights I can print off more tickets and just fill them in with what show we will be watching that night. It’s quick and easy to do and my kids love it! You can make up any kind of ticket that fits what you need, but if you want one that’s already made up, you can print off the one we use!
3. Eat yummy snacks!
Watching a movie is great, but eating yummy food while watching the movie is even better! I think the snacks may be the real reason why my kids look forward to movie nights so much!
We almost always have some type of popcorn when we watch a movie, because it just makes sense! Sometimes we eat microwave popcorn or pre-popped flavored popcorn from a bag, but our favorite popcorn is the kind we pop in our air popper ourselves. Making it ourselves means that we can flavor it however we want, which is nice.
And while the kids like the popcorn part, they love the special candy treats that they get when we have movie nights…and who can blame them?! However, if I left it up to the kids, they would eat an entire box or bag of candy without even thinking twice about it! So, to prevent upset bellies, I put different types of candy in small containers, which lets the kids enjoy having a special candy treat, but limits how much of it they get to eat.
I have found that washing and reusing the plastic containers from deli meat and using silicon cupcake liners work great for holding those small pieces of different candies (this set up also work well to hold snacks while traveling). I give a plastic container to each one of my kids and put four of the cupcake liners in each one. This way I can put four different kinds of candy or snacks into each container for some variety. It’s a cheap and simple idea, but the kids love that they each get their own container of goodies to eat while they watch the movie!
What other things do you do to make your movie nights more fun? No matter what you decide to do, your kids are sure to have a great time! So go ahead and plan your own family movie night and enjoy spending time together with your kids!
